"In the Swiss villa where Mary Shelley conceived Frankenstein, Gothic and modern horror collide. Someone is killing writers, and Tom Taylor stands right in the path of danger. But Tom can't leave until he's found his father's last message to him – and a bizarre gift that will bring him into direct conflict with the Unwritten." - DCComics.com
Tom Taylor is a young man living off the notoriety and fame of his disappeared father, famous author, Wilson Taylor. A young Tommy Taylor is the hero of Wilson's books. Tom is confronted at a convention by a young media student questioning Tom's real identity. The media gets ahold of the story and before Tom realises it, Police have reopened the case into Wilson's disappearance and Tom becomes a suspect. As his life spins out of control, Tom must find out what happended to his father.
When reading this book, people will invariably draw a parallel between the young Tommy Taylor, "the lovable boy wizard with the flying cat", and Harry Potter. I however prefer to compare Tommy with Timothy Hunter from the Books of Magic, which was published 7 years before Harry Potter.
Mike Carey and Peter Gross have crafted a compelling tale which evokes feelings of Books Of Magic, H P Lovecraft and Tin Tin in equal measure. Issue 4 sees Tom visiting the family home, a villa where two hundred years earlier, Mary Shelley created Frankenstein. Tom is looking for clues to what happened to his father. He may not like what he finds....
